The definition that we like to use for addiction is
the continued use of a psychoactive substance despite adverse consequences;
whether the adverse consequences are psychological, social, or physical. We believe that this is a good "working definition" in
that it fits nicely with the CAGE test. The CAGE test has been nicely
validated for alcoholism by Booker Bush, M.D.
Although the CAGE test is for alcoholism, it is useful in characterizing and screening for other addictions.
